Reclaiming Downed or Dead Trees and Creating Beautiful Wooden Things…
At Donovan Woodworking, every project begins with a vision and a carefully selected piece of hardwood. While we create a variety of custom woodworking projects, our passion is designing handcrafted live edge epoxy river tables and slab furniture that celebrate the natural beauty of wood.
Each slab tells its own story through its grain, texture, natural edges, and unique character. Rather than hiding these features, we build around them, creating one-of-a-kind furniture that cannot be duplicated by factory production. Whether it’s a stunning dining table, a custom conference table, a live edge bench, or a statement piece for your home, every project is individually crafted with precision and attention to detail.
Located in East Pittsburgh, Donovan Woodworking proudly serves homeowners, businesses, interior designers, and anyone looking for custom furniture that combines timeless craftsmanship with modern design. Our goal is simple—to build furniture you’ll enjoy for decades while preserving the natural beauty that makes every slab truly unique.
Choosing custom furniture isn’t just about selecting the right size or wood species. It’s about creating something that reflects your style, complements your space, and serves a purpose for years to come. That’s why every project at Donovan Woodworking begins with a conversation—not a catalog.
Whether you’re dreaming of a live edge epoxy river dining table for family gatherings, a custom conference table that makes a lasting impression, or a handcrafted bench that showcases the natural beauty of solid hardwood, we take the time to understand your vision before a single cut is made.
Every slab is different, and every customer has their own ideas, needs, and inspiration. Some come with detailed sketches, while others simply know they want something truly unique. We work closely with you to select the right slab, discuss design options, and create a piece that’s built specifically for your home or business.
Our goal isn’t to build more furniture. It’s to create furniture you’ll be proud to own, use, and pass down for generations.
Every project we build is made with purpose, craftsmanship, and carefully selected hardwood. While Donovan Woodworking can create a wide variety of custom wood projects, our specialty is designing handcrafted live edge epoxy river tables that showcase the natural beauty and character of every slab.
Whether you’re furnishing your home, upgrading your office, or looking for a statement piece that can’t be found in a showroom, every project is built specifically for you.
Have a unique idea? We enjoy creating custom woodworking projects tailored to your vision. If you’re looking for something beyond our featured products, we’d be happy to discuss your ideas and design a piece that’s built specifically for your home or business.
A live edge epoxy river table is more than furniture—it’s a conversation piece. We carefully select premium hardwood slabs and combine traditional woodworking with modern epoxy techniques to create dining tables, conference tables, kitchen tables, and statement pieces that are as functional as they are beautiful. Every table is custom-built, ensuring no two pieces are ever alike.
Complete your dining space or entryway with a handcrafted live edge bench that perfectly complements your table or stands beautifully on its own. Designed for comfort, durability, and everyday use, each bench highlights the natural edge and unique grain of the wood.
Add warmth and character to your home with handcrafted floating shelves made from premium hardwood. Whether you’re creating open kitchen storage, displaying décor, or adding natural accents to your living space, each shelf is custom-built to fit your style and dimensions.
Create a stunning focal point with a one-of-a-kind hardwood mantel. From rustic live edge mantels to clean contemporary designs, every mantel is crafted to enhance the beauty of your fireplace while showcasing the unique character of natural wood.
In addition to live edge furniture, Donovan Woodworking builds custom dining tables, coffee tables, end tables, and other handcrafted hardwood furniture. Whether you prefer a traditional design or a modern slab table, every piece is built with lasting quality and attention to detail.
When a tree comes down, decisions about the wood are often made quickly.
Storm-damaged, declining, or removed trees may be chipped, hauled away, or cut into firewood because those are the easiest options. Yet some logs contain material that could remain useful for generations.
Donovan Woodworking reclaims suitable downed and dead trees and gives that wood another opportunity.
Once a log is opened at the sawmill, it may reveal wide boards, distinctive grain, natural color variation, or figure that was impossible to see from the outside. A tree that stood on a property for decades can sometimes become a table, bench, or other piece that continues to carry a connection to that place.
Not every log is suitable for furniture. Species, diameter, length, decay, cracking, embedded metal, and other conditions can affect what the wood can become. Understanding those limitations is part of working responsibly with reclaimed material.
We do not try to force every tree into the same outcome. We look at the wood that is actually there and consider its best possible use.
A sawmill turns an unknown log into material you can evaluate and use.
Donovan Woodworking provides sawmill services for customers with suitable logs they would like to turn into slabs or boards. The wood may come from a tree removed from a home, family property, farm, or other meaningful location.
Before milling begins, it helps to know what you hope to do with the material.
A future table may require different log dimensions than smaller woodworking projects. Cutting a valuable section too short before speaking with a sawyer can limit what can be produced. For that reason, we encourage customers to contact us before a potentially useful log is divided into firewood-sized sections.
The size, species, condition, accessibility, and possible presence of metal all need to be considered. Freshly milled wood also contains significant moisture and is generally not ready to become furniture immediately. Proper drying is an important part of turning a log into stable woodworking material.
If you have a tree or log you hope to save, call us before it is discarded. We can discuss what you have and whether milling is a practical option.
There is value in understanding wood before it reaches the workbench.
When you see a tree become a log, a log become a slab, and a slab become a finished piece, you develop a different relationship with the material. You see where tension appears, how grain changes through the trunk, where natural defects develop, and why one section may be better suited to a project than another.
That knowledge influences our woodworking.
We understand that natural character and structural suitability are not always the same thing. A dramatic feature may become the focal point of one project but create a weakness in another. A beautiful slab still needs to be evaluated for how it will be supported and used.
By bringing sawmilling and woodworking together, Donovan Woodworking can consider the material as part of the design from the beginning.
Every table, bench, shelf, and custom project is individually handcrafted in our East Pittsburgh workshop. We never mass-produce our furniture, allowing us to focus on quality, precision, and the unique details that make every piece special.
We carefully select hardwood slabs for their natural beauty, distinctive grain patterns, and character. Every slab has its own story, ensuring your finished piece is completely unique and impossible to duplicate.
No two homes or customersare alike. We work closely with you to understand your style, space, and functional needs, creating furniture that’s tailored specifically to your vision instead of forcing you to choose from standard sizes or designs.
Quality craftsmanship never goes out of style. Using durable hardwoods, proven woodworking techniques, and careful finishing, we create furniture that’s designed to become part of your home for many years to come.
Donovan Woodworking is located at 425 Highland Avenue in East Pittsburgh and serves customers throughout Pittsburgh, PA, and surrounding communities.
Western Pennsylvania has a long relationship with both hardwood trees and skilled craftsmanship. Mature trees are found throughout established neighborhoods, residential properties, and larger parcels across the region. When those trees come down, some contain wood worth preserving.
Our work connects that local material with sawmilling and traditional woodworking.
A tree can become a log. A log can become a slab. And with the right decisions, that slab can become a piece with a useful life far beyond the tree’s original location.
Donovan Woodworking creates custom furniture, live-edge pieces, antique-inspired and recreated furniture, and other one-of-a-kind wood projects. We also provide sawmill services for suitable logs.

Possibly. The tree species, log size, condition, internal decay, how the tree is cut, and the intended project all affect whether the wood can be used. Contact us before the log is cut into short sections or removed if you hope to preserve it for future woodworking.
Yes. Donovan Woodworking provides sawmill services for customers with suitable logs they would like to turn into slabs or boards.
Usually not. Freshly milled wood contains moisture and generally needs to dry before it can be used for stable furniture. The required drying time depends on factors such as species, thickness, moisture content, and drying method.
Live-edge furniture preserves part of the natural outer shape of the tree. Every slab has its own contours, grain, knots, and other characteristics, so the design should respond to the individual piece of wood.
Depending on the project, Donovan Woodworking can recreate an older piece or use its design details as inspiration for new custom furniture. Dimensions, materials, function, and the level of reproduction required can be discussed before the project begins.
Yes. Photographs, sketches, measurements, and examples can all be useful starting points. They help communicate the style, proportions, details, and function you have in mind.
The timeline depends on the project’s size and complexity, the selected wood, whether the material is ready for use, and the current shop schedule. A more accurate timeline can be discussed after the project details are understood.
Call (412) 593-6444 and tell us what you have in mind. If you already have a log, slab, antique reference, photograph, or approximate dimensions, those details can help begin the conversation.
